Just prior to the 2009 – 2010 school year Welland Hydro-Electric System Corp., in cooperation with the local Zellers store in the Seaway Mall, launched its “Bag To School” initiative which provided 90 backpacks full of school supplies for Welland elementary students. In addition, conservation items and materials were also included in each backpack for both the student and their guardian(s).

“This initiative would not have been possible if it wasn’t for the generosity of our local Zellers store” said Jason Biesma, CDM and Key Projects Manager at Welland Hydro-Electric System Corp.. Most of the backpacks and school supplies, which were heavily discounted by Zellers, were distributed directly to the students. Others were donated to local schools and Family and Children Services in Welland.
