Scholarships

In its ongoing goal to educate the community about energy conservation, reducing demand and the impact that unnecessary energy consumption has on the environment, Welland Hydro-Electric System Corp. has established the Conservation and Demand Management Scholarship Program for secondary schools in Welland that choose to participate. Introduced in 2008, this scholarship can be awarded to a graduating student, or group of students from a participating secondary school, progressing to post-secondary education.

To be eligible for the scholarship, a graduating student or group of graduating students, would create an energy conservation plan for the participating school or another building as identified by the school. The plan would be evaluated by their teacher and/or school based on the following:

  • staying within a fixed budget,
  • energy conservation savings,
  • reduction in peak demand,
  • environmental impact,
  • creativity, and
  • ability for the plan to be implemented.

Welland Hydro-Electric System Corp. has allotted enough funds so that a scholarship can be awarded in each of Welland's participating secondary schools. For more information about this program, please contact your school.

2009 Energy Conservation and Demand Management Scholarship

Both members of school's environment club, Samantha Pringle and Catherine Roy spent months doing research and making phone calls to discover the best methods Jean Vanier could put in place to conserve energy. The pair created the plan as part of a program sponsored by Welland Hydro-Electric System Corp., in which high school students compete for the Energy Conservation and Demand Management Scholarship.

Pringle, who is attending Brock University for nursing next year, and Roy, who will study science at the University of Ottawa, each received $1,000 towards their schooling.
